Dongdaemun Gate (East Main Gate) in
Seoul, South Korea, is one of the four
main Seoul’s Gates. Dongdaemun Gate, also called
by Koreans Heunginjimun, is National Treasure n. 1 and
it was first built in 1396 by King Taejo; however, the
structure as we see it today was built by King Gojong
in 1869.
Dongdaemun Market, Seoul
Dongdaemun is famous for its market. Dongdaemun Market
is in reality made up by several traditional markets and
a few modern shopping malls. In Dongdaemun Market customers
can find wholesale shops and stalls as well as retailers,
and you will be spoilt for choice, as the market has about
20 malls, 30,000 stores and 50,000 wholesalers. Goods
sold at Dongdaemun Market include clothes, fabrics, yarns,
fashion
accessories and shoes and this market is famous for its
cheap prices and for night shopping, many of its shops
being open from 10am to 5am the following morning. In
Dongdaemun Market there are thirteen traditional markets,
which coexist with twenty modern malls, the most famous
of which are Migliore, Doosan
Tower and Freya Town. In Dongdaemun Market you can
also find a lot of restaurants and food stalls, as well
as entertainment facilities such as a multiplex cinema.
Dongdaemun Stadium, Seoul
Near Dongdaemun Market there is Dongdaemun Stadium. Dongdaemun
Stadium was built in 1926 and used to be the main centre
for sport events in Korea, before 1988 Summer Olympics
when Seoul Sports Complex was built. Dongdaemun stadium
has two sections: a soccer ground and a baseball field.
The soccer field has a capacity of 30,000 seats and was
used for a few football matches during 1988 Olympics.
Nowadays, Dongdaemun Stadium
football section is used as a flea market.
